Understanding the differences between traditional nappies (we call them ‘open nappies’ or just ‘nappies’ at Peachies) and pants can empower you to make informed decisions that best suit your child’s developmental stage and your lifestyle. At Peachies, we’re here to help every step of the way, ensuring you feel confident and supported throughout your parenting journey.

Traditional nappies

Traditional nappies, often referred to as open nappies or taped diapers, are designed with adhesive tabs that secure around your baby’s waist. This means they're typically applied while your little one is lying down, making them particularly suitable for newborns and less wriggly children - often before your little peach is standing.

A standout feature of open nappies is their high absorbency (versus Training Pants, for example, which may be considered a potty training tool), making them perfect for long nights or outings where frequent changes may not be feasible.

Nappy wranglers also often appreciate the snug fit and adjustability of open nappies around your little peach’s waist. The same open design offers an advantage for sneaky changes when baby is sleeping. Pull back the tabs, remove the soiled nappy and slide a fresh one underneath. Parents that use Peachies, however, report fewer nighttime changes because of our innovative moisture wicking materials that absorb liquid in seconds and keeping your little one dry and comfortable for longer (see our Reviews).

But at Peachies, we’re all about going the extra mile for parents. Not only do we offer a wetness indicator on all our nappy sizes from 1 to 6, but also Peachies nappies have super sticky tabs that you can apply and reapply to ensure the perfect fit until the next change. No faff of tabs ripping off, or the nappy sliding off as it fills up.

We don’t stop there. Peachies Nappies are equipped with a higher back to provide extra protection against blowouts, particularly in those early months before weaning.

Peachies Nappies are engineered to be incredibly soft and keep your baby dry, comfortable for long stretches so you have one less thing to worry about as you navigate the beautiful chaos of parenting.

Pants

As your little one grows and becomes more active, their nappy needs may change. Enter Pants, which resemble standard underwear and are pulled up and down as well.

The flexibility and security of the 360-degree design of the waistband aims to foster independence. Typically for children 7 months and older (or when they become wriggly and prefer to stand during changes) pants offer greater freedom of movement, allowing your child to move, crawl, and play comfortably.

Pants are further distinctive for their easy up, easy down nature - much like underwear. Parents can change a pant with a child standing. You can either tear down the side seam on each side, or slide pants down for removal. Hot tip, when there’s a number two, it’s best to lie the child down and tear down the sides for the cleanest removal.

Our philosophy with Peachies Pants is that you get our award-winning, nappy-level absorbency to protect little peach during play, on the go and overnight. Our wetness indicator is included on all three pants sizes - Size 04, Size 05 and and Size 06.

Peachies Pants also offer a ‘seal the deal’ sticky tab at the back which is identifiable with it’s blue colour. Just like you seal an envelope or a package, this tab seals the pant ready for disposal, keeping everything securely inside. It's like a little promise of no mess!

What to consider for potty training

Training Pants are a tool that some brands offer to help in the potty training process, as some pants are designed to be less absorbent. This allows your child to feel wetness and encourages them to recognise their bodily cues. Experts debate what the best approach is and we have our own opinion which we’ll save for another article. We just want you to know ‘Training Pants’ exist and have a distinct use case separate from Peachies Nappies and Pants.

Making the right choice

Choosing between nappies and pants hinges the needs of you and your little one in the context of their developmental stage. Plenty of parents opt to use nappies with their toddlers whilst others are eager to transition to pants as soon as possible. The point is, the choice is yours. Our aim is to empower you to feel good in your decisions. Ultimately, we strive to make your nappy wrangling experience as hassle-free as possible, allowing you to focus on the priceless moments with your little one.
